Qardl

App · Character animation and promo video

Characters that
sell an app.

Qardl was a networking app with a lot to say. We gave it three characters, one story each, and a promo that pulls them together.

The brief

A networking app.
An unfamiliar idea.

Qardl combined digital business cards with a searchable network of people and businesses. We framed it as “LinkedIn meets a digital rolodex”, and its director, Neil Grassby, agreed. Features alone would not make anyone care, so it needed people viewers could recognise.

What we did

From a one line idea
to four finished videos.

We took Qardl from concept to animation in four steps.

01

Concepts and scripts

We sent Qardl the promo concepts and scripts on 11 March 2025, and the first storyboard followed on 20 March.

02

Storyboards

Each video was drawn out as a storyboard first, so Qardl could comment before any animation started.

03

Three characters

Jess the Connector, Big Mike the Hustler and Riley Quinn the Innovator each got a story of about 1 minute that shows a different way to use the app.

04

One promo, then the cut downs

The promo brings all three together, running 1 minute 10 seconds. We then cut the videos into 8 shorter versions for social.

About the project

A little more detail.

What went into the work, and where to find out more.

What did The Sequence make for Qardl?

Scripts, storyboards and 4 animated videos: 3 character videos and a promo. We also made 8 shorter cut downs for social and handled Qardl’s early social content.

Can animation explain an app that is hard to describe?

Yes. Characters give viewers someone to follow, and the phone screens show the app doing the job. Each Qardl video follows one person with one problem.

Do you write the scripts too?

Yes. We wrote the scripts and storyboards, then sent them to the client for comment before animating anything.
